If “popularity” is the reason why Mahathir thinks Anwar should not lead the Opposition, then a reality check is what he needs

Malaysian Mirror       Monday, July 13, 2020
Tun Mahathir, in his bid for Dato’ Seri Shafie Apdal and his son Dato’ Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as PM candidate and deputy prime minister 2 respectively for the opposition, told the media that Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim is “unpopular” and losing people’s support. The former 4th and 7th Prime Minister has been adamant in defying the stance that PKR and its president made in the choice of PM candidate if the opposition takes over Putrajaya by believing that Malaysians will not support an attempt to make a comeback by Pakatan Harapan (PH) if Anwar Ibrahim is designated as prime minister. What a ridicule! Had he not performed a reality check on his own popularity? He was the one who marred Anwar Ibrahim’s image and reputation for decades and now he is claiming he and his choices, i.e. Shafie Apdal and Mukhriz Mahathir, are far better than the opposition leader?

The truth is, Tun Mahathir has never let anyone else become popular or more popular than he has been, particularly at being a good leader who is loved and well-respected by the people for contributing well to the nation. Even during the time of the late Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Mahathir’s ambitious plot of a political mutiny made him famous for the wrong reasons. He was shunned by the late 1st Prime Minister for being the rebellious one. Until now, Tun Mahathir still makes anyone or his rivals ‘popular for the negative reasons’ by destroying their reputations, just like what he did to Anwar Ibrahim. Nevertheless, he has been ignorant of the fact that Anwar Ibrahim’s perseverance and patience will pay off greatly as he tries to oppress the latter even more. Thus, how could Tun Mahathir say Anwar Ibrahim is “unpopular” when he himself is losing popularity among the Malaysian voters due to his own selfishness and greed? This is ironic.
