While netizens are urging Warisan president Dato’ Seri Shafie Apdal to forget about becoming prime minister, Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chien Jen has called for a deadline for PKR president and opposition leader Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to get his numbers of MP support for Pakatan Harapan (PH). Although Anwar Ibrahim is PH’s first choice for PM candidate, Chong said that Shafie Apdal should be given a similar chance to prove his worth as it is high time for an East Malaysian to be leading Malaysia progressively.

In his statement backing Shafie Apdal, he said that Shafie Apdal could break the nation’s long, toxic racial and religious politics besides helping them to shape a new nation towards racial harmony and inclusive regional development, as well as due to his “consistent stand against corruption”. As fellow East Malaysians, Chong said that Sarawak DAP has no other reasons for not supporting Shafie Apdal to hold the top post. The question is, does Chong’s stance represent DAP as a whole? If Shafie Apdal and Tun Mahathir’s claim says that the former was a choice by DAP, why did DAP collectively and finally choose Anwar Ibrahim instead in their last presidential council meeting? Or is this part of Tun Mahathir’s doings to shaken Anwar Ibrahim? Is Sarawak DAP getting ‘special incentives’ from Tun Mahathir for campaigning for Shafie Apdal?
